MelBarchie Exclusive Interview: Phillip Hudson
Just about two weeks ago Vibe Magazine published an article titled: "The Mean Girls of Morehouse" {Get the Story Here:http://bit.ly/9DpzUF} This story had the internet buzzing after it was released. People could not understand how men attending Morehouse College could be so feminine. The men interviewed told of a different type of Morehouse man. A Morehouse man that wore make-up, the most fashionable clothes, and some even wore heels on occasion. One of the men really stuck out to me. Phillip Hudson, a 6"4 21 year old with big hair. His story, unlike the others, was one of depression, loneliness, and the need to have his father's approval. I wanted to know more about this young man. After speaking with Phillip I now understand the pain this young man has gone through. Phillip Hudson went into detail with me about his family, career, and some events from his childhood. He also told me about the many opportunities that have come his way since the article was released. He has been speaking with students at high schools and at funerals for children who have committed suicide due to bullying. This young man has so much to be thankful for. MelBarchie.com would like to thank Phillip for sitting down with us. Enjoy the interview.
MB: Who is Phillip Hudson:
Phillip: Phillip Hudson is, whew, I’m a character. I’m a very strong willed character fighting for what’s right. I’m still fighting for what’s right within my family, but a lot of people can relate to, or characterize themselves with what I’ve been through. I’m outspoken, loves living life, and I’m a fighter.
MB: Would you refer to yourself as a gay/bisexual man?
Phillip: I refer to myself as an androgynous male(An androgyne in terms of gender identity, is a person who does not fit cleanly into the typical masculine and feminine gender roles of their society) That’s what I refer to myself as. I don’t conform to sexual identity because when I introduce myself I don’t say “Hey my name is homosexual, Hey my name is gay, or Hey my name is bisexual.” I say “Hi my name is Phillip Hudson, what’s your name?” Conforming to sexual identity is where society get things so confused. The word gay means happy so if you want to call me gay then fine call me gay. I’m very happy. It’s not what people call you, it’s what you answer to.
MB: What made you want to attend Morehouse
Phillip :(Sighs) For some reason I’ve always had a dream about Morehouse. There have been all these negative responses about why I wanted to go there, and that I chose to go there because of all the men. No, no, no, no. I thought Morehouse would be the place where I would go to acquire or attain a brotherhood that would teach me how to be a man. Or even teach me how to act like a man. I didn’t have my father to teach me these things. Growing up, I didn’t have any male figures in my life. I had my mother, so I learned to do things like a woman. I thought Morehouse would be the place where I would meet new people who could help me with the way I acted and dressed.
MB: After you got to Morehouse and you began interacting with the other students did you feel like you had made the wrong decision?
Phillip: Umm, no. Well yes and no. I say yes because I didn’t have the support of my family like I should have had going to a historically black college. I’m there seeing all of these parents coming to support their child during student/parent orientation and I didn’t have that. My mother came but she had to leave early. I was more so expecting my brothers to come and just be supportive and it wasn’t like that. It was kind of depressing to see everyone with their parents and I was just there by myself. The first week I was there I was called a faggot. Guys were screaming faggot, I need to go back where I cam from, and all this other stuff. I had to put it in my head that I cam here for an education and that’s what I’m going to do. So yes and no. But it wasn’t for people bashing me.
MB: You are not a member of the “Plastics” but you are very close to them, did your relationship with them make your stay at Morehouse any better?
Phillip: Yes. They were the first group of openly gay students to approach me. I remember when I first met Michael, I saw him in the bathroom with Diamond and , I’m tall 6”4, and they were just so shocked to see me. They were like oh my God you’re so tall, and so big, and so fashionable. We became really close so people started associating me with them. People gave me the name quote en quote “Amazon” because I’m so tall. People would even call me the security guard for the Plastics because I would be the person to go up to the guy that called me a faggot from far away. Do you mind repeating yourself?
MB: That’s that Nene in you coming out LOL
Phillip: Not even Nene I was just trying to educate them. Do you know what the words faggot means? People call me Nene now because it gets to the point where I’m going to be in your face confronting you. The Plastics were a really good group of friends who just didn’t care what people thought about them. They were there to tell me not to worry about what people thought about me and to just be myself.
MB: After two years of attending Morehouse what was the breaking point for you?
Phillip:It was just to a point where I just felt lonely up there. I went home one time and that was for my uncle’s funeral and I just felt alienated by my father and his side of the family. At one point my aunt went to my father and asked him if he would congratulate me on completing a semester at Morehouse and that turned into an argument outside the church. So it was more so me trying to be closer to my mother. I got so lonely up there and when I’m alone that’s when the suicidal thoughts come.
About two weeks after my birthday I tried to commit suicide. I drank a half of bottle of Ever Clear vodka. The article says that I was thinking about it but I actually got in my car and tried to find a cliff to go over. My car actually ended up on a median and I passed out. I didn’t tell anyone about that until the article. I couldn’t take it anymore. I was so lonely there.
MB: Ok let’s fast forward, the Vibe story has been published and has the internet going crazy. What is going on in the world of Phillip Hudson?
Phillip:I’m in school and working. I’m a crisis management publicist so that’s what I’m doing a lot of. I work with a couple of celebrities and that takes up a lot of my time. I have been speaking at funerals and schools about bullying and what it does to people.
MB: When I read your part of the story I couldn’t help but notice how much you wanted to change for the sake of your father, now that the story is everywhere has it helped or hurt that relationship?
Phillip: I haven’t spoken to my father in about 2 ½ or 3 years. We have never had a strong relationship at all. It’s always been a hate/hate relationship with us. I think he’s the way he is because of the way people will view him in the church. My father is just a really homophobic individual. My dad just doesn’t like me.
MB: A lot of the comments on Vibe were appalling, is it hard dealing with the negative tweets, comments, and stories about you and the Plastics?
Phillip: No it’s not hard. Why hide behind the internet. I publicly gave my number out on Vibe. Someone kept making comments so I gave my number out and said please call me so we can meet face to face. I don’t believe in hiding behind the internet when it comes to something you feel so strongly about. If you’re that adamant about something then let’s meet face to face and have a grown-up conversation. I don’t have the time to read all the comments, especially negative comments about an article that’s not even elaborated on. Aaliyah wrote the article to bring awareness to what was going on in the Morehouse Community.
MB: So you are at a new school studying Fashion right?
Phillip: Yes I am at The University of South Florida in Tampa Bay Florida. I’m studying Mass Communications with a double concentration in Media and Fashion Arts Entertainment with a double minor is Marketing and Business Management.
MB: And if they can’t shut up after that I don’t know what to tell them! Are you more comfortable at this school?
Phillip: I was comfortable at Morehouse. I’m 6”4 so people stare at me at USF but the difference between USF and Morehouse is that people are not gathering. There are thousands of people at that school so people don’t have time to pick at what people have on. They stop, they look, and they keep it moving.
MB: Looking at your picture I can’t help but think you would make a great bff! Do you have a lot of female friends who look to you for fashion advice?
Phillip: (Laughs) I have female friends that call me and actually look to me for boyfriend advice. They come to me for fashion advice to but more so relationship advice.
MB: My last question, would you change anything from Morehouse to the Vibe story? Why? Why Not
Phillip: Umm I wouldn’t change anything because I feel like it was something that needed to be said. Before this article I was advocating to stop the bullying and suicides of people in the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender community. My therapy comes from helping others. I may have changed the way some things were worded. I applaud Aaliyah because she did a good job of editing the interview. I would have probably been more provocative than she was. But there have been so many positive responses from the article though. I’ve gotten so many positive facebook and twitter messages to the calls and people reaching out to me.

It Gets Better: Are you wearing Purple Today?
My sister texted me and asked if I had on Purple today, I replied "No but my nails are purple." I have been hearing about the "It Gets Better" but I was not aware that people are trying to make 10/20 a national holiday for the Lasbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgendered who have taken their own lives due to bullying. I personally want to tell every LGBT person who reads melbarchie.com that It does get better.

Beyonce expecting her first child?!
According to Us Magazine Beyonce is expecting her first child with husband Jay-Z! I'm soooo happy for her.
Here are some quotes from US Magazine:
"B was shocked. She loves kids, but she wasn't ready to be a mother just yet," said a source close to the singer. "She really wanted to get her album done and tour the world again."
Another insider said Beyonce, 29, believed "this is a gift from God, and she's so happy."
The couple have not yet confirmed the news -- and Beyonce has been subject to false pregnancy rumors in the past, notably in March when U.S. website Mediatakeout reported Jay-Z was "extremely happy to be having his first child with Bey."
Umm we shall see how this plays out.. Let the media tell it Beyonce should have at least 12 kids as many times as its been reported that she was preggo. If this is serious CONGRATS B!!

Monica leaves Twitter?
Monica was one of the most positive people an twitter and today she tweeted that she was leaving twitter to protect her and her and the people in her personal life. I wonder if Keyshia Cole is next? Twitter is an excellant way to connect with your fans but it is also a way for your haters to have 24/7 access to you. I really hate that people use the internet to diplay their inward "gangsta." I was really upset as I read her message in my timeline. I can't say that I blame her though. *melshrug*
Here is her message(I couldn't get screen shots, I'm gueesing because she deactivated her acct.. This is from my timeline):
Hey there. I want to thank all of u who have been so supportive of myself & family for so many years. I hate to say this But I will no longer be on twitter. I love the fact that I am able to speak to my REAL supporters but it has also become a way for people to do malicious things, when my sole intent was to spread positivity. I love u guys dearly and will find ways to stay in touch. I have dear Friends on twitter & team Monica will make sure u have all information on dates etc.Again I love u guys but this is better for the protection of my children, my family, fiancé and fans. Too much is being said that I didn’t say and for a person that believes so strongly in being 100 at ALL times. I just can’t do it. I will see all of u guys very soon. I LOVE U …Take care
Death to all haters!

Nicki gives Diddy the Boot! *UPDATED*
Wow it has only been a few months since Nicki Minaj named Diddy as her manager and she is already giving him the boot.. smh Nicki doesn't feel like Diddy is taking her to that "level" so she's moving on to Benny Medina. Damn Diddy. I guess Nicki said "you will not make me another Total/112/Carl Thomas.....Check out the press release:
Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown breakout superstar NICKI MINAJ has decided to dismiss rap mogul, Sean “P diddy Combs” as her music manager and has recently signed a new deal with MEGA MANAGER, BENNY MEDINA, whose current and past clients include Multi Grammy Award winning recording artist, MARIAH CAREY, GWEN STEFANI, BRANDY, AND MORE.
Nicki’s Statement:
“By now, everyone should now that I am really strict when it comes to my representation. I had sympathy for Sean however I feel as if I haven’t gotten the guidance the manager is supposed to give his client. Personally, I feel like I’m being managed by mother. Even if you play the smallest role on my team, I wish to see progress. I’d like to thank him for everything he has done for me; for taking me under his wing. I wish him the best with repping Rick. But now that my album is about to drop, its time to get serious and stop playing games. If I could turn back time…I wouldn’t have made the decision to let Troy go.”
*When I read this I said damn Nicki was just at the awards with Diddy what in the hell happened that fast.. Anywho Nicki confirmed that she has neva eva met Benny and things are good with her and Diddy.. That statement from her was really rude and out of order. Long stry short she has not fired Diddy!
Nicki tweeted:
Monica & Shannin Brown Engaged!
Well it looks like Monica and Lakers player Shannon Brown are getting married! OMG they make the cutest couple and I'm just happy Monica is happy. The two have been dating since he appeared in her "Love All Over Me" video back in June. From reading her tweets she seems to be very happy and in love.. Congrats Mo!!

Damn... Tip is going back to jail
T.I was sentenced on his parole violation to 11 months in jail.. This is just pitiful to me. He just got out less than a damn year ago. SMH I wonder if Tiny will be sentenced to jail time as well..hmmmmmm Maybe this time around Tip will understand what is truly at stake and come out a changed man
Before the judge sentenced T.I he pleaded:
“As I discovered in talking to my probation officer, I had many problems from my childhood. Now I am down to the disease of addiction. I need help. For me, my mother my kids. I need the court to give me mercy. Judge, don’t send me back to prison.”
He also offered an apology to anyone affected by his going back to jail:
The only thing that I can say, man, is that all people who have supported me, who were behind me, who believed in me, who were disappointed and were let down, I just offered my sincerest apologies, and I will dedicate my life no matter how long it takes to earn your trust back and to make you proud yet again”
Damn Tip... Do Better but he has two weeks to turn himself in.

The Mean Girls Of Morehouse stirs up trouble...
Whoa!!!!Whewn I first heard about this story I couldn't belive it...The mere fact that these men actually walked around campus dressed as women, at Morehouse, threw me wayyyy off. Now I'm all for individuality but chile... Sometimes we have to put that to the side. Morehouse is a very accredited college with certain principles they expect the young men attending to respect. Dressing up as a woman is def not one. You would think the "Plastics" would understand that. I love the gay/lesbian community but sometimes we have to be considerate of others. Now on to this Dean, I feel where he is coming from but on the same right what about all of the men that attend the school and are either gay or down low? The "Plastics" just so happen to be out and have no shame. While reading his letter, I could feel his anger word for word at this article. No one can be mad at Aliya S. King for reporting about the story. Hell she's a damn reporter! Check out more info on the story that has a lot of people upset:
From Vibe:
The article, written by Aliya S. King, profiles four students (two current, two former) who choose to dress as women, meaning they "...rock makeup, Marc Jacobs tote bags, sky-high heels and Beyonce - style hair weaves."
The story itself developed from the controversial dress code policy issued by Morehouse recently stating that students were not allowed to wear caps, do-rags, sunglasses or sagging pants on the Morehouse campus or at college-sponsored events. But what had folks up in arms at the male-only school was the line that students couldn't wear women’s clothing: dresses, tops, tunics, purses or pumps. So, who wears high heels at Morehouse you ask?
The first student profiled goes by the name of Diamond:
“Morehouse wasn’t ready for me,” says Diamond. “I’m about freedom of expression. I’m about being whomever you truly are inside. I came to Morehouse because of all the historical leaders that attended and impacted the world so heavily. You know, I really wanted to follow in their footsteps. I don’t think Morehouse believes that someone like me—someone who wears heels and dresses—can uphold that reputation. But they’re wrong.”
Diamond is a part of a crew, "The Plastics," made up of seven or eight former and current Morehouse students, some of whom share a townhouse in Atlanta. He tells VIBE that he and his crew took their name from the 2004 Lindsay Lohan flick, Mean Girls, a nod to the A-list crowd. The Plastics all assume that the recent dress code policy was aimed directly at their personal freedom of expression, which sometimes includes foundation, cross-dressing, and even taking female hormones.
But Kevin Rome, the former vice president for Student Services for the College, says that people like Diamond are a small minority of the students at the College, and shouldn’t make up such a large percentage of the press the school has received about the appropriate attire policy. He says, “There are nearly 3,000 students at Morehouse, and maybe three that [the ban on women’s attire] applies to. We’re giving such a large influence on a minute population. It’s not representative of the school.”
And it's also not representative of the school's gay community. One of the most interesting pieces of the article talks about homophobia within the gay community itself. The Plastic's say their relationship with the gay community can be downright hostile. "It’s because we have a certain aura,” says Michael, one of the Plastics. We don’t care what people think about us when it comes to how we dress and carry ourselves. Some people are uncomfortable with it.”
Kevin Webb, who runs Safe Space, an organization that supports the gay community at Morehouse puts it this way: “In some ways, it’s like it’s okay to be gay. But not that gay. Or it’s okay to be queer. But not that queer,” he says. “There is homophobia even within the gay community—which is something we have to deal with if Morehouse is going to progress.”
And if you're wondering about the stance the administration takes on the issue, here's the response from the college's President that was sent out to Morehouse alum:
Dear Morehouse Community:
Next week, Vibe magazine, a hip-hop music and culture monthly, will publish in their October/November issue an article on Morehouse. I strongly disagree with the likely substance of this article and wanted to write to you directly to share my views.
The article, entitled, “The Mean Girls at Morehouse,” purports to examine the lives of some of our gay brothers as it relates to the enforcement of our appropriate attire policy we enacted a year and a half ago. It seems clear from the headline alone that the Vibe editorial team’s intent is to sensationalize and distort reality for the purpose of driving readership. The title of the article speaks volumes about a perspective that is very narrow and one that is, in all likelihood, offensive to our students whether gay or straight.
As president of this institution, as a Morehouse graduate and as a father, I am insulted by what is to be published. Addressing our young men as “girls” is deeply disturbing to me, no matter what the remainder of the article may say. Morehouse has for 140 years developed men—men who are equipped to live and contribute to an increasingly diverse, global and complex world.
Let me be clear. I believe in the freedom of the press and its critical role in examining all facets of our society to foster reasoned discourse and to promote understanding of topics both popular and unpopular. We will not always agree with what is written. I disagree, however, in journalism that attempts to malign and distort, rather than inform and enlighten.
I need not tell you that the black male is already faced with challenges in nearly every aspect of his life. Injustices abound. Families are broken. And our young black boys are failing to reachtheir potential in grade school and middle school at pandemic rates. And while the world grapples with complicated issues related to economic disparity, racism, sustainability, and diversity and tolerance, Morehouse stands in the breach, seeking answers to the pressing issues facing our young men, encouraging dialogue and expecting excellence.
The world is complex, and it is diverse. Morehouse reflects that same complexity and that same diversity. It is unfortunate that the Vibe article will heighten misunderstandings and advance or inform little.
In the end, no media outlet can shape who we are or in any way diminish our mission. But together we can encourage media outlets like Vibe to provide fair, well-researched and balanced journalism.
Finally, Morehouse will stand by its values. We will continue to set high standards and focus on the development of our young men. Thank you for standing with us.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Franklin
President
